William K. McLaughlin Memorial Scholarship
In honor of William “Billy” McLaughlin, a 37-year firefighter with the Milton, Massachusetts Fire Department.
Billy was a firefighter, through and through. Most of his life was spent wearing a Milton firefighter’s uniform, with his characteristic belt buckle off to the side. He was always quick with a smile and a joke, followed by his contagious laugh.
Billy is best described as a man who put others first. As much as he loved being a firefighter, Billy’s love for his family was unmatched. He never missed an opportunity to reach into his pocket to help someone in need.
In honor of Billy’s spirit of generosity and his life of service to his family and community, the William K. McLaughlin Memorial Scholarship was established to assist relatives of Milton, MA firefighters in their educational pursuits.
Eligibility
In order to be eligible, the applicant must be the child, grandchild, great-grandchild, niece or nephew of a current or former Milton firefighter, who has served two or more years with the Town of Milton (MA) Fire Department. Scholarship eligibility is limited to students who will be enrolled in a college or other post-secondary institution during the upcoming school year.
The deadline for filing an application is April 15. The winner will be notified no later than May 15. Any application submitted after the deadline will be ineligible for consideration.
Selection
Award
Each year, one scholarship will be awarded in the amount of ten thousand ($10,000) dollars for the purpose of payment of college or post-secondary education tuition. Payment will be made to the recipient in the form of a check upon receipt of verification of enrollment and tuition. No beneficiary will be eligible to receive more than one scholarship grant; therefore, past recipients of the William K. McLaughlin Memorial Scholarship will become ineligible in subsequent years.
